About Us
Our Beginning
The story of how Karyam Capital got it's start begins with a trip by David and Melinda Queen to India in November of 2023. One of their stops was Dohnavur Fellowship in Southern India. Dohnavur Fellowship is well-known among protestant Christians as the home of Amy Carmichael, one of the most prominent and beloved Christian missionaries of the 20th Century. They were profoundly moved as they considered the legacy of love, faithfulness and the sheer scope of Amy Carmichael's ministry. Founded in 1901 the work of Amy Carmichael was still flourishing in the work of Dohnavur Fellowship.
The trip to Dohnavur Fellowship included a van and walking tour of agricultural land owned by Dohnavur Fellowship. Most of the land was unsuitable for growing crops or grazing farm animals. It was overgrown with weeds, scrub bush, volunteer trees and dead and fallen limbs. In contrast to the unusable land, some of the adjoining land was being used by small plot farmers.
The leadership of Dohnavur Fellowship knew the land had once been productive and recognized that it presented a business opportunity for someone with the vision and capital to bring the land back to productive use.
As is frequently the case turning the business opportunity into a reality would require someone(s) with vision, dedication and the ability to marshal financial resources to start a business.
Those "someone's" were David Devasayhem and Dan Bowers, both of whom were on the tour. These two men had decided to form a for-profit agricultural business that was also a "business as mission." Dan and David had many friends and supporters wanting to support their efforts. But because the business was a "for-profit" there were many challenges, some governmental and others related to how business as missions are funded. Karyam Capital was created to address those challenges.
Karyam Capital
Karyam Capital Funding LLC is a Kansas limited liability company formed in October of 2024. The sole member of Karyam Capital is the Bhutanese Nepali Church of Kansas (BNCK), a Kansas nonprofit corporation. As the sole member, BNCK controls Karyam Capital. Karyam Capital was formed to facilitate investments and support start-up companies in India, Bhutan and Nepal that operate as "business as mission".
What is "business as mission?"
Business as mission is generally thought of as using a for-profit business as a tool to further a broader social or spiritual mission, often with the goal of impacting communities and individuals in a holistic way, including economically, socially and spiritually, while still operating as a sustainable business venture; essentially, using business practices to actively contribute to a higher purpose beyond just profit-making.
BNCK, Dohnavur Fellowship and India, Nepal and Bhutan
BNCK embraces the Great Commission. While its size and resources are small by comparison to other churches, its passion and zeal for Christ and to share the good news of the Gospel is not. With its members coming from Bhutan and Nepal it has organic relationships to the countries of Bhutan, Nepal and India. These linkages include contacts with pastors in these countries and hosting pastors from these countries. Many of the families in the congregation have relatives living in Bhutan, Nepal and India and the adequate training of pastors is of great interest.
Reuben Diyali, the founding pastor of BNCK, has many connections in India, Nepal and Bhutan. Before he and his family were resettled in the US he was involved in Bible training efforts in Northern India and Nepal. All three of his children attended school at Dohnavur Fellowship.
